MOST EXCELLENT #1 USA BOOMBOX SUPERSTAR posted by fred flare comment (1)

Caleb Japan Boombox

At our recent Holiday Kick-Off Party 2011 Extravaganza, I was asked what my favorite kind of music is. It was a hard question to answer.

“Um, I guess, like, noise … pop … from Japan?”

Unsatisfactory response! So here, in this Very Special Boombox, I can better explain myself. I hope you dig it!

Fred Flare Ann Nicki Minaj

The always fun to watch Nicki Minaj. Her songs are super ear worm. Plus, I’ve discovered gold paint and can’t help but want to use it with every illustration now.

Expanding my portrait skills to include stylish men, starting with one of my favorite current actors – Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Not going to mention that I pretty much cried through the whole hour and forty minutes of 50/50. On that note, Happy Saturday! Go catch a new film with a big box of Milk Duds.

A Babirusa Offering posted by fred flare comments (2)

Things are non-stop busy right now, so here is a painting of a babirusa from That’s Not My Name as a humble offering and thank you for being awesome.

Here is some information on the babirusa, taken directly from my book:

Babirusas are wild pigs native to the Indonesian islands. Its Indonesian name “babirusa” translates into “pig-deer”. They can be found in the tropical forest, and are omnivores but feed mainly on fruit. Males have tusks that are formed from their canine teeth, and if not worn down the tusks can grow long enough to pierce the animal’s skull. Babirusas are gifted swimmers and have been known to travel across wide bodies of water to reach small islands.

Actually, I’m a Scarlet Ibis posted by fred flare comments (3)

I’m working on a new book/zine about zoo animals – specifically, the ones who are often misidentified for their more, er, popular counterparts. Like this Scarlet Ibis. I did some research in the field, and made a record of the best mistaken identities and now I’m helping clear up the facts for these undervalued animals. The zine’s titled That’s Not My Name!

“Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.” posted by fred flare comments (3)

Lucille Ball is one of my all-time favorite actors. I grew up watching I Love Lucy reruns with my grandfather on many afternoons, and still watch it now whenever it’s on TV. I even named my first (red) dog Lucy, after her. The way her 100th birthday was celebrated on the internet recently was so magical, especially the tiny television set on Google’s homepage.

One of the most unexpected roles I ever saw her in was in Ziegfeld Follies – she was every inch the glamour girl of Fanny Brice and Esther Williams, but still hammed it up better than the boys on her own show. I love a beautiful, smart and funny woman.

We Only Said Goodbye With Words posted by fred flare comments (7)

I’ve wanted to do an illustration of Amy Winehouse since I heard of her sad passing a couple weeks ago. Like many, I was a huge fan of her music and her irreplaceable voice that made you feel less alone when your heart’s so broken you can’t even find all the pieces. Thanks, Amy.

A Summer List posted by fred flare comments (4)

Finally delivered a huge project to the printer’s today, so I spent the rest of my (finally free again) evening painting and watching trashy television while eating ice cream. It was perfect. So now to make a to-do list for the rest of my summer before it slips out of reach.

Summer 2011 Goals!
- see Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA
- eat oysters on the beach
- read by a pool
- take a mini-break with Ryan
- make new zines in preparation for APE!
- go to Disneyland and see the Mary Blair exhibit
- create a bunch of new work in preparation for graduating
- read at least 6 books
- clean & organize studio and apartment
- have a fun photo shoot
- go to an outdoor movie night
- eat huge ears of corn dripping with butter & take photobooth pictures at a county fair
- make my own ice cream

MEET THE 20 DESIGNERS OF PROJECT RUNWAY SEASON 9 posted by fred flare comments (2)

Remember when we were all bummed out that Project Runway was moving from Bravo with the Magical Elves to Lifetime with the Real World people? I still feel that way. Season 9 starts Thursday, July 28 at 9PM. I sat through all their hometown visit, closet tour and casting session videos on MyLifetime so u don’t have to. Meet the 20 Designers!

I’m liking Amanda, who longs for the days when people dressed up. She is…a vintage floral Dior chapeau chewed up by her Yorkie. Also liking Anthony’s Edgy Sportswear with interesting dyeing techniques. Danielle is adorable…and her last collection was for a Suffragette costume drama? David is so feeuz and I love his apartment too… Gunnar’s videos were funny or die. Thrifted music festival personal style next to his Kentucky Derby gowns. Julie is all for stripes and tweeds since joining the Equestrian Team. Seth Aaron loves Julie’s High Fashion outerwear – Pendleton blankies, puffer coat made out of a comforter. She’s Ralph Lauren southwestern for hipsters. I like Serena’s Ashley Olsen-like double circle skirts. Viktor brought eclectic NYC chic to the casting sesh in the form of Neoprene bolero over purp lace baby doll.

TEEVZ: GLEE – “New York” posted by fred flare comment

**PIP PIP HOORAY! ALERTZ** New Direx is in NYC for Nationals, with two new original songs to write and a coach to possibly lose. So is Will staying or going? Will Rachel pick Finn or Jesse? And will they actually win Nationals? All these questions and more are answered in the second season finale of GLEE…

The team is over the moon, all Big-Apple-eyed about being in NYC. Cue mash-up of “I Love New York/New York, New York” through Central Park. Finn tries to win Rachel back with a romantic comedy-perfect date, complete with a street choir serenade of “Bella Notte” from the boys of New Direx. Rachel doesn’t come around until after they duet at Nationals to Finn’s song for her, “Pretending”. continue reading TEEVZ: GLEE – “NEW YORK”
