This weekend Keith and I held our second annual Spring get-together in Savannah, Georgia. (Last year, we visited Graceland.) Founded in 1733, Savannah has a rich history and a marvelously restored historic district to accompany it. There are gorgeous mansions, Southern oaks dripping with Spanish moss, monuments, parks, and references to such movies as Gone with the Wind, Forrest Gump, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
But the truth is we didn’t choose Savannah to steep ourselves in its rich background. Originally we picked it because it was warm, sunny, easy to get to, and had a reputation for good food. Here we are in Forsythe Park amid the flowering shrubs and alabaster fountains, and we’re happy as clams.
Tomorrow it’s back to work, but we’re already talking about next year’s excursion. So if any of you have suggestions of places that meet our criteria,we’d love to hear from you.
The trip is almost over?! Dang. Well, I hope you had a great time! I was in Savannah this time last year, and it was SO nice. Did you see Paula? For next year, how about somewhere in Vermont? Actually, Real Simple recently published a special Travel issue that showcases 10 ‘hidden gems’ in America. Check that out!! They all look amazing. I hope you’re having a stellar time!
comment by Tommy — March 30, 2008Next year, you should go to Washington DC around this time of year! it is the cherry blossom festival, and it is so gorgeous outside especially around the mall and all of the monuments.
comment by maggiemaemary — March 30, 2008quite lovely indeed!
I applied to the Savannah College of Art and Design! I was going to be visiting there soon, but it cost too much. Now I’m disappointed! I’m glad that you had/are having such a wonderful time! I’d recommend where I live for next time…but it is cold, only occasionally sunny, and easy to get to– if you consider three hour winding drives “easy.” It is mighty beautiful and we do have some pretty good food, though… xoxo, Bee
comment by Bee — March 30, 2008You should come to Austin, TX. This time of year is the peak of the good weather, there is AMAZING food, a lot of cool weird people to meet, great shopping, and 2 lakes!
I have always wanted to go to Savannah!
