I love Fall. I grew up in season-less Northern California, and so I'm obsessed with autumn on the East Coast. The air gets crisper and it's time to bust out my cutest coat, buy some pumpkins at the Farmer's Market, and bake, bake, bake. I'm going through a huge Try New Things phase, and this has resulted in loaves upon loaves of hearty whole wheat bread (just call me Peeta), and jars of crunchy bread and butter pickles.
There's something inherently satisfying with buying a big ole pile of locally grown cucumbers, slicing and brining and canning them, and then putting them on a sandwich with fresh baked bread. Sure, it's time consuming and often frustrating (try rising bread dough in a cold kitchen sometime) but the results are so worth it. Not only are they delicious, but you made them! Yourself! DIY at its most tasty.
Bringing it back around to Fall... yesterday I baked my first apple pie of the year, and when I pulled it out of the oven the kitchen filled up with cinnamony, apple-y, autumny smells and I almost at the whole thing right then & there. Bring it on, Rock-tober!
What's your favorite fall food (to eat and/or make)? Let me know in the comments... I can't wait to try it!
