I can’t even believe it took us this long to see Dreamgirls. I mean B is my girl and Jennifer Hudson has major buzz over her performance. I won’t dwell on my tardiness so let’s get to it… Let’s get right to our DREAMS!

Okay, if you’ve been living under a rock lately, then you might not know that Dreamgirls was originally a Broadway adaptation of the story of The Supremes and Motown Records. It’s now a gem of a movie that’s getting hot Golden Globe nods and serious Oscar buzz!

The film starts out in Detroit with a girl group of three darlings: Effie White, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson who call themselves the Dreamettes. Effie (played by the stunning Jennifer Hudson) is the lead singer and belts out a huge jam at a local talent night. The crowd goes crazy espesh when Effie jiggles her boob-inz. The girls don’t win the competition but they catch the eye of Curtis, a local manager played by Jamie Foxx. Curtis talks the girlz into singing backup for a soul star, James “Thunder” Early, played by Eddie Murphy. The girls want to be top billed but they agree to work the background singing thing. Curtis promises to make them stars but they have to pay their dues. Effie promises to make him her man… Which girlfriend does pronto!!

Curtis believes in this new R&B sound and thinks it should hit the mainstream. He works his bunz off molding the girls into diamonds and eventually breaks them off on their own with a new “Hollywoodesque” name, The Dreams! In an effort to get the girls more exposure with the American Bandstand set Curtis rearranges the girls and takes chubette Effie off lead and puts skinny and pretty Deena (played by Beyonce) as the lead. Needless to say, Effie is not happy about the change but they’re a family and decide to make the switch to get them all farther.

As time goes by Effie gets real pissed as Deena gets more beautiful and is totes seen as the star! Then in the most thrilling number of the movie, everyone gangs up on Effie and she’s pretty much fired. Jennifer Hudson sings her chops out her and I loved that we all clapped at the end of her song. I’ve never actually seen so many people clapping in a movie before. It really felt like we were watching a live performance.

So Effie’s off the show, she heads back to Detroit, has Curtis’ secret baby and she basically drinks herself into oblivion! Meanwhile The Dreams get a new third member and with Curtis in the driver’s seat, they hit it big. But somehow, Curtis is never quite satisfied with anything… He wants more. Beyonce really heats up the screen here as a major glamazon! Although, Curtis keeps Deena on a short leash, never really letting her fully express herself with what she wants to do as an artist… Typical male!

Back in Detroit, Effie makes a major move with her brother to pull herself outta the gutter and get a hit single on the airwaves. She nails it big time in a local club and begins to get some small radio stations to play her single. In Hollywood, Curtis catches wind that Effie has a new sound, so what does he do, he totes steals it for The Dreams and bribes DJ’s to not play Effie’s song. So shady! Once Deena finds out what a sleaze ball Curtis is, she leaves him and goes back to mend her broken friendship with Effie. Here Beyonce cranks out a major drama jam “Listen”… again, more applause!!! As the film comes to a close, The Dreams give their final performance and they invite Effie on stage to sing “I’m your Dreamgirl” one last time. Major tears in my beerz, people!

I love this musical so much! Even though the plot line falls a bit flat here and there and it’s pretty long, clocking in at over 2hrs long, I would totally recommend it for the music and singing. Jennifer Hudson’s role is way meatier that Beyonce’s so I’m sure she’s a shoe-in for winning the Golden Globe and even an Oscar! Beyonce was fantastic too, her role is just that of a weaker person, but she looks fabulous! You know, I often was thinking of Beyonce and Destiny’s Child during the movie. I mean Destiny’s Child totally had these 2 other girls in it that were friends with Beyonce and her dad totes fired them. I wonder how true this role rang for Lady B! Art does mimic life!

All in all I enjoyed Dreamgirls tremendously… I give it 3-1/2 hearts!
