Right now thousands of kids are at summer camps all across the country. Beyond being super jealous, I try to do my best by listening to stories about camp on This American Life and reading these HILARIOUS letters from camp. P.S. I Hate It Here is a collection of letters by Diane Falanga. This one in particular has been circulating all around the web and cracks me up every time I read it. I am totally curious how you can fudge saying the word “eggs”!
The camp episode of This American Life was fantastic!
comment by Katie — July 8, 2010Well. I have to admit. I often tease my mom and sister-in-law for how they say egg. They pronounce it: aygg instead of egg. I can’t explain it but it is sooooo annoying! There’s no A in egg!
comment by Jen — July 8, 2010oh summer camp. I am currently a camp counselor! The kids are pretty cute!
…not to mention, I have camp songs stuck in my head 24/7!!
comment by Emily — July 8, 2010haha, this is great… i’m at opera camp right now, but it’s a day camp and it’s only for 2 weeks. the only bad thing is that it’s in a totally non-air conditioned church and this past week has just been a total heat wave, so that’s pretty much torture!
comment by ang — July 8, 2010The word “egg”, in a Standard American Dialect, is pronounced with an “eh” vowel, as in the word “met”.
In some parts of the country (I notice it most when speaking to people from southern California), the word “egg” is pronounced with the “a” vowel from the beginning of the word “alien”, or even the “ay” diphthong at the end of the word “today”.
