This unexpected move to New York landed me in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, or
the
"campus," as we affectionately call it at fred flare. Imagine
Manhattan, except
cozier.
Then add almost everything you’d expect from a hip college
town: cute
kids in their
twenties, lots of small shops, cafes and bars, some art and
a few
freaky characters
that you can’t help running into every other day.
Sometimes
you can’t wait to
graduate and get out of this place!
When I need to get away I love to stroll into other neighborhoods and investigate.
After all, I have my Nancy Drew image to uphold! Over the past few months
I have
had fun exploring Brooklyn and have uncovered some interesting facts. First,
it’s
huge!
More people live in Brooklyn than anywhere else in the U.S. except
Manhattan,
Chicago and Los Angeles. Here are some of my other discoveries:
Greenpoint, which I frequent often because of its proximity to Williamsburg,
was
the
birthplace of actress Mae West. I love strolling through McCaren Park
and
checking
out all the sites along Manhattan Avenue. It feels like you are
in a
different time or,
for that matter, a different country…Poland!
I’ve also recently discovered Brooklyn Heights. It is the home of
the 1960’s
television
show "The Patty Duke Show," one of my favorites in
re-runs. I can stroll
on the
promenade along the East River all day. It’s the most spectacular
view of
Manhattan
I have ever seen! You can see the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn
Bridge. Patty
Duke didn’t have it so bad!
After strolling on the promenade it’s fun to continue walking between
the Brooklyn
Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge into DUMBO. (Down Under The Manhattan Bridge
Overpass.) DUMBO is a small artist’s community, but I was pleasantly
surprised at
how many cute restaurants and bars there were in just those few blocks.
The most
exciting part about DUMBO is how the light cast shadows under the bridge.
I love
that
movie set feel!
My adventures in Brooklyn are just beginning. I’ll try and share
more with you as I
go. I do really love it, though. I love the collection of neighborhoods
and how
different
each one is. And each one tells such a fun story. Mary Tyler
Moore
herself grew up in
Flatbush, and in 1996 was crowned "The Queen of
Brooklyn."
So Mary’s my Queen, Patty’s my pal and Mae’s my neighbor.
Where my girls at?
Brooklyn, baby!
