I met Joe my first month in Chicago, back in the summer of 1991. I was just out of
college and had decided to move there after following the Go-Go’s across the country
during their reunion tour. I would dress up like Belinda, go to as many shows as
possible with different friends, find their tour bus and follow it to find the perfect city to
live in. Like New York is now, Chicago was that city back then. I had so much fun there
so I moved.

I made that decision pretty quickly – a common thread in all my moves, I suppose –
so my friends that also enjoyed Chicago with me on tour didn’t join me right away. I
would move first and they would come later. That was the plan. Of course they never
did move at all, but it was okay because I met Joe.

We met at a dance club on "goth night" if you can believe that. Everyone was sitting
around not dancing and looking depressed. In that scene it was hard to tell whether they
were actually having fun or just trying to pretend like they weren’t. All I knew was I didn’t
feel like dancing to any of the songs they were playing and was getting a little bored.

All of a sudden, the DJ started playing all of my favorite songs so I started dancing. I
was all alone on the dance floor because, clearly, these were not anyone else’s favorite
songs. During a little skipping dance number I was perfecting to a Tom Tom Club song,
Joe started dancing. Wherever I skipped, he skipped behind me. It was so much fun! We
danced and danced for the rest of the night. I later found out he was friends with the DJ
and, since the place was so empty, Joe had requested some of his favorite songs.

After that night we hung out almost every day for years. We were roommates on several
occasions, traveled to lots of exciting places and some not so exciting places, celebrated
holidays, helped each other through all sorts of good and bad times and had lots more
dance parties. It never really mattered what we did because we always had fun.

Joe moved from Chicago back to his hometown about a year before I came to New York,
but he was instrumental in my move here in so many ways. He not only helped me but
literally rented the U-Haul, packed it up, drove it to NYC, unpacked the truck and kept me
laughing almost all of the way. On my first official day as a resident of New York City,
Joe and I returned the truck and went straight to the top of The Empire State Building.
We looked out over the city and mused about my new life here and what was in store
for my future.

One thing that was certain about this new chapter in my life was that Joe would visit
often. Just last week he came for the weekend and we did the usual strolling all over
town, shopping (He bought me a cute hat at Anna Sui!), a bit of sightseeing, eating,
drinking and even went dancing at Luxx on Saturday night. We enjoyed checking out the
80’s via 2002 fashion and music. Chris even had his Madonna moment when he gave the
DJ fred flare’s single
Sparkle Pop. Spending our last night on the dance floor at Luxx
was a great way to end our visit since that’s where it all began!
